Jerry's family on her mothers side are members of the first daughters of America, her great, grandfather on her fathers side emigrated from Oldham to Texas in 1881.  He can be found in the census of 1861 as a cotton piecer and 1881 as a cardroom jobber.  In 1877 he married Martha Ann Standeven and a daughter was born in 1880 called Clara. 

In 1881 James went west to Texas looking for a better paid job with the possibility of buying land by taking a job with the Railway, laying a track from Hardwood to Gonzales. He sent for his wife and family the following year.  Martha died in 1883 and young Clara was adopted by friends, there is no further mention of James Jr.

Aug 1884 James bought 118 and a half acres of land, his experience in the cotton mills of Oldham qualified him to work on the railways, he was use a working with different types of machinery and he had supervisory role.  James was well respected in his new work on the railway.

He married for the second time in Nov 1886 to Parthenia and they had 8 children.
