Mr Meacher began his political career as a Labour candidate for Colchester in 1966, then stood for Oldham West by-election in 1968 but lost to the Conservative candidate.

He stood again in 1970 this time successful, this was the beginning of his commitment to the people of Oldham for 45 years.

During his career he has been a junior minister in Harold Wilson and James Callaghan governments.  When Labour was in opposition Michael was in the Shadow Cabinet for 14 years.  He became Environment Minister under the Blair government.

In 2007 he threw his hat into the ring for the leadership of the Labour Party.
